Job Title: Senior Design Manager

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Design Manager to lead our Design Department in the profitable engineering of our UK Sales and Projects Business. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring projects are designed in a cost-effective manner, as measured by management accounts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the daily operations and resources of a busy Design Department, comprising Electrical, Mechanical Design Engineers, and CAD Technicians, ensuring all deliverables are met within required timeframes.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including customers, Project Managers, Engineers, commissioning teams, sales, supply chain, and production, to identify and plan requirements.
  • Identify skills gaps within the department and create plans to address them through mentoring, training, or external partners.
  • Manage and evaluate supplier work, both on- and off-site, ensuring quality standards are met and sign-offs are aligned with project Quality Plans and Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).
  • Be aware of the contractual requirements for all projects, producing cost-effective solutions.
  • Manage and lead the safe design process, ensuring compliance with CDM, DSEAR, HAZOP, HAZID, OPMAN, SIL, and risk assessment studies.
  • Provide technical support to the Project Manager during installation, commissioning, and testing phases, ensuring timely production of all necessary documentation.
  • Attend site visits for technical and layout surveys.
  • Plan resources to achieve commercial and technical results.
  • Oversee the profitability and design of projects, ensuring on-time delivery in accordance with technical requirements.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction while achieving acceptable commercial results.
  • Manage the performance of the Design Department to achieve goals at the lowest operating cost.

Requirements:

  • At least 2 years' experience in power generation, process engineering, electrical distribution, and building services.
  • Familiarity with pipework and ventilation design, CDM, and health & safety regulations.
  • Proven experience in managing technical aspects of energy projects.
  • Experience leading a team of Design Engineers.
  • Flexible approach to working hours, including occasional weekend and out-of-hours work.
  • Willingness to undertake mandatory in-house training.
