Job Role

Job Summary
In this role, the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the design and development of rotating electrical machines, predominantly motors, but may also include pumps and fans. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of mechanical design principles, analysis, and simulation software. The role requires a high level of technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Clean-sheet mechanical design and development of rotating electrical machines.
  2. Exploration, design development, prototyping, and testing of concepts.
  3. Mechanical analysis of conceptual designs, demonstrating a strong understanding of likely component failure modes and material strengths.
  4. Build and test prototype hardware and test rigs as necessary.
  5. Build and strengthen the company's position within key markets by bringing industry-leading products from prototype through to production.
  6. Individually lead or contribute as a senior member within a team to deliver projects to internal or customer specifications.
  7. Utilisation of best-in-class simulation software as part of the development process to optimise and analyse product behaviour.
  8. 3D CAD modelling and 2D Engineering drawings of components and assemblies.
  9. Work with other design engineers and the wider cross-functional department to deliver programs.
  10. Work to company and industry quality standards.
  11. Develop and mentor junior colleagues.
Requirements
  1. Creation of high-quality 3D models and assemblies using Autodesk Inventor.
  2. Use of hand calculations and appropriate analysis software (ANSYS Mechanical, MATLAB, etc.) to validate designs.
  3. Production of high-quality 2D engineering drawings, for both manufacture and assembly, to BS8888.
  4. Design, development, and delivery of prototype components and related tooling.
  5. Appropriate selection of materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacture principles.
  6. Knowledge of design analysis skills such as Design for Manufacturing, DFMEA & PFMEA.
  7. Hands-on assembly of prototype hardware.
  8. Ability to understand technical requirements and their influence on design.
  9. Experience working directly with customers as part of a development program.
  10. Experience in working with and developing suppliers.
  11. Ability to collaboratively work with other departments and present to internal stakeholders.
Desirable Skills
  1. Experience with ANSYS, including static structural analysis, thermal and modal analyses.
  2. Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics.
  3. Experience with rotating machines.
  4. Packaging of electronic components and assemblies in mechanical enclosures.
  5. Good understanding and experience of working with a wide variety of materials and manufacturing processes.
  6. BOM creation and management.
  7. Liaising with suppliers/manufacturers.
Qualifications

A degree or equivalent in the following discipline is required: BEng or MEng in a relevant Mechanical Engineering degree. Relevant experience could also be considered.
