Main Purpose:

The main purpose of this role is to assist the Site Manager in maintaining the school premises, both internally and externally.

Key Responsibilities:
  • School Cleaning:
    • Undertake cleaning duties as determined by the Site Manager.
    • Ensure compliance with manufacturers and COSHH regulations in the mixing, use, and storage of cleaning materials.
    • Ensure the return of materials and equipment to appropriate storage areas after use.
    • Ensure the removal of waste to appropriate disposal points.
  • Deliveries/Post:
    • Take delivery of post, stores, materials, and other goods and assist in the unpacking and storage of these items.
  • Manual Handling Duties and Furniture Moving:
    • Assist with manual handling tasks, including the movement of furniture, adhering to health and safety policy and manual handling guidance.
  • Energy Conservation:
    • Read, record, and report all meter readings as required by the Site Manager and report any concerns.
  • Emergencies:
    • Clean up sickness and spillages as required.
    • Deal with all bursts, leaks, floods, fires, and breakages as appropriate and as soon as the problem is discovered. This may involve contacting professional tradesmen.
    • Deal with all electrical and gas emergencies, making safe initially by turning off the supply. This will involve contacting professional tradesmen.
    • Ensure access for emergency services, assist as necessary, and secure premises as required.
    • Adhere to guidance in the School's Emergency Management Plan.
  • Internal Maintenance:
    • Report all defects requiring specialist repair to the Site Manager or Business Manager.
    • Check electrical fittings and report defects as required.
    • Replace lamps and domestic fuses as required.
    • Synchronise clocks, time switches, school bells, etc., as required.
    • Undertake minor repairs to fixtures and fittings, including desks, tables, chairs, basic plumbing, as appropriate.
    • Redecorate agreed school areas as instructed by the Site Manager or Business Manager.
    • Replenish stock as required.
    • Remove graffiti as required.
    • Carry out minor works to improve the site as required by the Site Manager/Business Manager.
    • Attend appropriate training courses as required by the school.
    • Replenish stock throughout the school.
  • External Maintenance:
    • Maintain the cleanliness and general tidiness of all external areas, empty litter bins daily, and perform light gardening duties.
    • Clean and clear all drains, waste pipes, and gullies to ensure effective and healthy operation.
    • Check the outside fabric of the school, report/repair defects as appropriate.
    • Check all fences, gates, walls, steps, lights, etc. Report/repair defects as appropriate.
    • Keep the entrance to the school clean and clear of obstructions at all times.
    • Clear leaves, snow, ice, moss, and detritus as appropriate, including treatment of surfaces with salt, etc.
    • Check all outside areas for hazardous materials and remove as necessary.
    • Carry out internal window cleaning as required.
  • Other Specific Duties:
    • Act as a key holder to the school site.
    • Undertake basic record keeping as required.
    • Undertake other duties consistent with the post and job description as required by the Site Manager, Business Manager, or Head Teacher.
    • Cover for the Site Manager in their absence, including the opening and closing of the school premises for school use, lettings, out-of-school hours functions, maintenance, and emergency services.
    • Maintain an Assistant Caretaker's diary and repair book.
  • Health and Safety:
    • Site staff have a duty of care towards staff, pupils, and visitors of the school.
    • Keep up-to-date paperwork regarding:
      • Playground weekly checks.
      • Health and Safety monitoring/inspections with the Site Manager.
      • Risk Assessments.
      • Electrical Testing.
      • Asbestos Register.
    • Safeguarding Responsibilities:
      • Understand the role and responsibilities of all staff in safeguarding children in the Federation and providing a safe environment for children to learn.
      • Understand and meet the responsibilities outlined in the latest Keeping Children Safe in Education Part One.
      • Engage in and complete all training regarding safeguarding and ensure school policy and practice are followed.
