Nuclear Safety Inspector Role Overview

The Office for Nuclear Regulation is seeking a Nuclear Safety Inspector with expertise in civil engineering to join our team. As a Nuclear Safety Inspector, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe operation of nuclear facilities across the UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Regulate the design, construction, testing, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning of civil engineering structures
  • Assess the safety and security functions of these structures, including containment and protection of nuclear material
  • Undertake planned and reactive inspections on site, assess safety submissions, and manage discrete intervention projects
  • Conduct investigations, manage research projects, and mentor and develop the next generation of inspectors

Requirements

  • Degree-level qualification or equivalent in civil and/or structural engineering, or a directly related discipline
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional institution, or the ability to demonstrate performance and/or experience at an equivalent professional level
  • Experience of structural design to resist hazard loading, methods for modelling complex and ageing structures, and demonstrable understanding of foundation design/construction and geotechnical engineering
  • Knowledge of one or more nuclear/high hazard facilities, such as pressurised water reactors, advanced gas cooled reactors, or high hazard processing plants
  • Ability to assimilate, analyse, and provide judgements on new and complex technical issues, clearly and concisely
  • Strong communication, decision-making, and influencing skills, with the ability to see the bigger picture and target and prioritise work based on risk

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must hold or be able to achieve and retain National Security Vetting clearance at SC level.

Location and Travel

This post may be undertaken from a base at any one of ONR's office locations (Bootle, Cheltenham, or London). The successful applicant requires a full driving licence which permits the holder to drive in the UK unless reasonable adjustments can be made under the Equality Act 2010.

ONR operates hybrid working as part of our flexible working policy. There is an expectation that everyone will spend some time in the office on a regular basis, recognising that some work is better done face-to-face.
