About the Role
The Athletic is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join its newsroom team as a summer intern. This 12-week program is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in the fast-paced world of sports journalism. As a member of our editorial team, you will be exposed to every facet of the newsroom, from research and writing to editing and publishing. Our mission is to attract and develop the industry's next stars, and we are looking for talented individuals who share our passion for sports and storytelling.Responsibilities
- Assist in the research and writing of articles, including interviews with athletes and coaches.
- Conduct research and gather information for articles, using a variety of sources including online databases and interviews.
- Help to edit and proofread articles for publication, ensuring accuracy and clarity.
- Assist in the development of story ideas and pitches, working closely with editors and reporters.
- Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute to the development of new ideas and approaches.
- Learn and understand the editing process, including what editors look for in a piece and how to work with editors and sub-editors.
- Learn the importance of legal requirements, rights of reply, and investigations.
Requirements
- Currently an undergraduate or recent postgraduate student looking to break into the sports journalism industry.
- 18 years of age or older.
- Ability to work a 30-40 hour work week, including evenings and weekends when required.
- Flexibility: ability to adapt to fast-paced work environments where needs and priorities can change quickly.
- A can-do attitude with a determination to succeed and welcome constructive feedback throughout the internship.
- A tenacity to break a story, land an interview, and work with the rest of The Athletic's substantial staff.
- Deep knowledge of and a passion for sports.
- A willingness to work as part of a team.

- Provide a portfolio of at least 5 relevant samples showcasing strong journalism skills, ideally on sport.
