Job Title: Environmental Lawyer

We are seeking a talented and motivated Environmental Lawyer to join our team at the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP). As a key member of our legal team, you will play a crucial role in delivering our work on environmental governance and protection.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for a caseload of both contentious and non-contentious matters, working on both a standalone basis and embedded within our multidisciplinary teams. You will provide legal advice and assistance to our complaints team, input into OEP investigations, and conduct litigation to enforce compliance with environmental law.

Key Responsibilities
  • Providing legal advice and assistance to our complaints team
  • Inputting into OEP investigations and conducting litigation
  • Providing advice on aspects of environmental and public law, governance, commercial and other legal issues
  • Assisting with providing legal input and advice for projects to monitor and report on the implementation of environmental law
  • Undertaking legal research and analysis across a range of environmental and other laws
  • Supporting the training of other OEP staff, particularly in matters of environmental and public law
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to be a qualified solicitor, barrister or chartered legal executive in England and Wales, with some knowledge and a genuine interest in environmental law. You will also need strong legal research and analysis skills, able to identify relevant sources of information and analyse complex factual and legal issues.

What We Offer

We offer a competitive salary of £38,973, plus an employer contribution of £11,290 towards your Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. You will also have access to a range of benefits, including 25 days annual leave rising to 30 days over 5 years, additional paid leave for various situations, and flexible working arrangements.

Location and Office Attendance

The role is based in the OEP's General Counsel directorate, which comprises 16 lawyers and legal researchers. You will work closely with other members of our legal team, including the General Counsel and our other heads of function.
