We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our Newborn Screening Laboratory, part of the Chemical Pathology Department at Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Main Responsibilities- Undertake laboratory techniques in line with department standard operating procedures
- Carry out all laboratory investigations to a high standard of technical excellence
- Work independently within areas of knowledge and expertise
- Authorise and report results of investigations in accordance with SOPs, interpret results to assist diagnosis
- Ensure all results are reported within agreed turnaround times
- Take responsibility for internal quality control and external quality assessment schemes for designated tests
- Assist in the management of departmental quality systems as directed by the laboratory manager and quality manager
- Plan and take responsibility for the efficient and effective organisation of work
- Supervise and undertake technical work
- Monitor stocks, reagents, and consumables, and order supplies as necessary
- Train and supervise Medical Laboratory assistants, Trainee Biomedical Scientists, and less experienced staff members

Person Specification- Our Always values
- BSc in Biomedical Science or related BSc Laboratory Science degree
- State Registration with HCPC: training/assessment completed in a Chemical Pathology or Molecular Pathology Laboratory
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Experience in a Pathology Laboratory
- Experience of Quality assurance including accreditation standards
- Knowledge of Newborn Screening
- Computer Literacy and ability to analyse data to influence decisions
- Knowledge of Quality Management Systems
- Knowledge of Quality assurance including ISO15189 standards
- Experience in Data Handling
- Health and safety legislation
- Good Interpersonal Skills
- Able to communicate effectively with staff (written and verbal)
- Competent in basic laboratory techniques including centrifugation and qPCR
- Ability to work without supervision
- Evidence of good manual dexterity skills
- Good presentation skills
- Evidence of basic troubleshooting skills
