Job Summary

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to lead the Hydrogen Strategy and Portfolio team. As Deputy Director, you will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UK Hydrogen Strategy and its UK Hydrogen Economy Roadmap, including publishing twice-yearly delivery progress updates and regular internal reporting of progress against commitments and deliverables.

The successful candidate will have a strong track record of leading complex and multiple areas of work at pace, setting vision and direction, and building and maintaining strong collaborative relationships. You will be an excellent communicator, skilled at representing the UK Government position and able to present complex ideas and issues clearly to all levels and audiences.

The role requires a high degree of political astuteness, with the ability to think strategically across a complex and emerging system. You will be confident working with, and developing, evidence and using it to inform strategy, and personally be comfortable working with analysis and explaining its implications clearly to Ministers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Hydrogen Strategy and Portfolio team, overseeing the implementation of the UK Hydrogen Strategy and its UK Hydrogen Economy Roadmap.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including Ministers, senior departmental leadership, and industry partners.
  • Provide strategic advice and guidance to Ministers and senior officials on hydrogen policy and strategy.
  • Lead the development of policy and strategy documents, including the UK Hydrogen Strategy and its UK Hydrogen Economy Roadmap.
  • Represent the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero at national and international events, including conferences and meetings with industry partners.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key industry partners, including hydrogen producers, consumers, and infrastructure providers.
  • Provide support and guidance to other teams within the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero on hydrogen policy and strategy.

  • Strong track record of leading complex and multiple areas of work at pace.
  • Ability to set vision and direction, and build and maintain strong collaborative relationships.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to represent the UK Government position and present complex ideas and issues clearly to all levels and audiences.
