Consultant Psychiatrist - Adult Eating Disorders (In-patients)

The NHS is seeking a locum consultant psychiatrist for the Adult In-patient Eating Disorders Ward, Avalon Ward, Springfield University Hospital. This is an established post.

This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic and dynamic consultant psychiatrist to join this well-established in-patient eating disorders unit, with well-functioning MDT and good national and international reputation.

Main Duties of the Job

The Adult Eating Disorder services comprise of the following: inpatient unit - Avalon ward, outpatient service and day unit. All are located in a new, state of the art Trinity building.

Avalon Ward is an 18 beds, providing care for local and national patients, mostly from Surrey, Sussex and Kent, with eating disorders requiring inpatient treatment. The service accepts patients from age of 18 who cannot be supported effectively in the community.

Job Responsibilities

The appointed consultant will provide overall clinical responsibility for the inpatient assessment, care and treatment of adults on Avalon ward. The postholder will share the clinical responsibilities of these patients with the other part-time consultant and a very experienced SAS doctor, so that the workload is manageable.

Person Specification
  • Primary Medical degree
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCPsych, or equivalent
  • General Adult Psychiatry or eligible for such inclusion on the Specialist Registrar within three months of completing their CCT
  • Section 12 (2) approval of the Mental Health Act
  • Talking therapy such as CBT, DBT or MBT
  • Management and service development skills
Knowledge and Experience
  • Completed minimum of three years full time training in approved higher psychiatric training scheme
  • A detailed knowledge of main treatment approaches for severe mental illness
  • Knowledge and experience of the CPA process, risk assessment and risk management
  • Experience of teaching medical and non-medical staff
  • Previous experience of managing patients with Eating Disorders.
Audit and Management
  • Commitment to developing practice through clinical audit and/or research
  • Commitment to working with allied agencies including carer's groups, and local charities.
  • Experience of service planning and development
  • Experience of working with third sector partners
Research and Publications
  • Evidence of participation in research, and outcomes of studies
  • Higher degree in research Completion of a research project and evidence of its dissemination
  • Publication in a peer reviewed journal
Teaching
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry
  • Teaching Qualification
  • Evidence of feedback good from students
