Design Manager Job Description

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Design Manager to join our team at Story Contracting.

About the Role:

The Design Manager will be responsible for proactively leading and managing the design process and team in accordance with Network Rail and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, primarily Network Rail Asset Management Teams.
  • Integrate the Safe by Design approach into the design management process.
  • Lead and manage the design process to deliver cost-effective, buildable, and considered solutions in collaboration with project management teams and internal stakeholders.
  • Strategically allocate consultants based on experience, capacity, and skill set, and manage delivery to agreed-upon programmes, quality, and cost.
  • Continuously improve the design management process through lessons learned and sharing best practices both internally and externally.
  • Identify future people capability and capacity requirements to support our growing business plan.

Requirements:

  • Qualified to degree level, HNC/HND, or equivalent in Civil Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer in a relevant discipline (desirable).
  • Experience working as CRE or CEM (desirable).
  • Robust knowledge of design disciplines and practices.
  • Experience working within the rail and/or construction industry.
  • Extensive experience in applying engineering principles.
  • Good working knowledge of H&S regulations and legislation.
  • Good understanding of Network Rail specifications, standards, and procedures.
  • Strong commercial acumen.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent influencing skills.
  • Experience of managing and leading a team.
