Job Summary

The Emergency Department Technician plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality emergency and urgent care within a specialist area. This role involves working collaboratively with Medical and Nursing staff to initiate preliminary investigations of patients attending the Emergency Department.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Ensure appropriate prioritization of work in collaboration with Lead Emergency Technicians and the Nurse in Charge.
  2. Undertake venous blood gas sampling and process results using the Arterial Blood Gas near-patient testing system.
  3. Inform medical and nursing staff of any variance to results from local parameters.
  4. Maintain near-patient testing equipment and perform internal quality control checks.
  5. Liaise with Medical Engineering regarding maintenance contracts for equipment, faults, and repair.
  6. Carry out basic life support in emergency situations.
  7. Be aware of the Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) plan and the role of other staff within the Emergency Department.
  8. Be aware of local plans that may impact on the ED, such as Fire, Bomb, or IT incidents.
Working Relationships

The Emergency Department Technician will work closely with the Band 5 Lead Emergency Department Technicians and be overseen by the Emergency Department Matron/s.
