About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Pharmacy Technician to join our team as an Aseptic Services Technician. As a key member of our pharmacy team, you will be responsible for supporting the effective and safe operational running of our Pharmacy Aseptic Services Unit (PASU).

Key Responsibilities

  1. To work under the direction of the Accountable Pharmacist and be competent to take receive, assess and action orders for all products managed by PASU.
  2. To be competent to calculate and check doses, prepare and check worksheets and labels using the Pharmacy's IT system, and set up and check raw materials, consumables and equipment for all products.
  3. To be responsible for and supervise the transfer disinfection into PASU and classified cleanrooms of all items required for aseptic processing, following departmental standard operating procedures.
  4. To accurately and consistently participate in the aseptic preparation and compounding of high-risk injectables, including cytotoxics and monoclonal antibodies, and intrathecal injections under a section 10 exemption of the Medicines Act.
  5. To take part in pre and in-process checking of products prepared aseptically by PASU and maintain competence in this area where applicable training and qualifications have been achieved.
  6. To take part in the supervision of operators during aseptic preparation where applicable training and qualifications have been achieved.
  7. To accurately collate and pick orders for pre-prepared products, and to place and check orders using an on-line IT ordering system.
  8. To accurately complete the required checks to enable safe receipt of all deliveries of pre-prepared aseptic products, raw materials, consumables and equipment.
  9. To physically unpack deliveries, place in the correct location and in stock rotation order and support in the co-ordination of stock management.
  10. To be competent to dispense all pre-prepared aseptic products, including cytotoxic, high risk injectables, parenteral nutrition, oral chemotherapy, clinical trials and support medication.
  11. To be a named person on the intrathecal register for the purpose of safely dispensing and manufacturing intrathecal drugs in line with local and national policies.
  12. To consistently deliver quality assurance of high-risk injectable medicines and to notify the Senior team of any incidents or procedural deficiencies by means of deviation and error reporting.
  13. To support the Senior team in delivering Corrective/Preventative Action process.
  14. To safely handle hazardous materials and waste, such as cytotoxics, monoclonal antibodies, sharps and cleaning chemicals, according to Trust COSHH and health and safety policies.

About Us

We are a dynamic and multidisciplinary team delivering a quality chemotherapy service to our cancer patients. This role will include supporting the transition of the service through a period of strategic change from entirely outsourced to a mixed service of outsourced plus in-house compounding of high risk injectable medicines.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • NVQ / QCF Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent plus accredited underpinning knowledge (BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent) Training completed over 2 - 3 years.
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Desirable

  • Eligible and willing to undertake Pre and In-process checking qualification within aseptic services.
  • Eligible and willing to undertake Cleanroom Supervision in Pharmacy Technical Services Accreditation.
  • Attended or willing to attend the Aseptic Preparation and Dispensing of Medicines (TSET) training.

Experience

Essential

  • Basic knowledge and experience of pharmacy.
  • Working within a team.
  • Managing own workload to meet the needs of a service.

Desirable

  • Previous hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Previous aseptic preparation experience.
  • Previous clean room environment experience.
  • Stock control and rotation.
  • Supervision and co-ordination of service activities.

Skills

Essential

  • To be able to manipulate fine tools and materials with physical accuracy and dexterity.
  • Ability to work in an isolator fully gloved and gowned.
  • To be able to clean sterile cleanrooms as required.
  • Accurate with attention to detail.
  • Able to concentrate for extended periods where work pattern is unpredictable.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate information effectively to staff and patients using clear written and spoken English.
  • Ability to perform numerical calculations accurately.

Desirable

  • Technical ability and knowledge in cytotoxic and aseptic reconstitution.
  • Knowledge of Pharmacy computer systems.
