National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS)
NABIS is a key component in the UK's strategy to reduce firearms criminality, providing a national centre of excellence for forensic science, intelligence, and knowledge around the use, supply, distribution, and manufacture of illegal firearms and ammunition.
NABIS supports UK Law Enforcement at a local, regional, and national level, as well as offering support internationally through engagement with key European law enforcement agencies.
The role of Forensic Ballistic Expert is responsible for carrying out ballistic examinations to identify intelligence opportunities, including comparison of ammunition and firearms to identify linked series.
The successful candidate will be required to work office hours, 36.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, and take part in a weekend on-call rota, with occasional travel nationally and internationally.
Key requirements include:
- Extensive work experience with a leading forensic organisation or as an independent expert consultant.
- Completed a recognised 'Expert witness course' in firearms and have court experience.
- The ability to manage an independent case load and ensure that casework is delivered within demanding service level agreement timescales.
- Experience of assisting and supporting on-the-job training of staff as required.
- Experience of working in a quality management environment, in particular ISO17025.
