An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic optometrist to join our progressive ophthalmology team at Wirral University Teaching Hospital.

Applications are invited from GOC registered optometrists who would like to work part time as part of a multidisciplinary team of ophthalmologists with a wide range of specialist interests, optometrists, orthoptists, and other support staff.

Previous hospital experience is desirable but not essential as training will be given.

Candidates who have less than 3 years post qualification experience may be considered to start at band 6 level with a view to progress to band 7 once training and set targets are completed.

Main duties of the job

The role offers the opportunity to develop clinically in a broad range of core optometry services including paediatric and adult refraction, contact lenses, and low vision rehabilitation.

Our optometrists work alongside consultant ophthalmologists in paediatric, corneal, glaucoma, and retinal clinics allowing you to further develop your clinical skills.

There will be opportunities to participate in regular teaching, training, and clinical audit to enhance your knowledge and also contribute to the training of others in the department.

Job responsibilities

Specialist Optometrist with a special interest in anterior segment, glaucoma, or medical retina. We are looking for colleagues who would like to use or develop their specialist skills in the areas of anterior segment, glaucoma, or medical retina. We would like you to join us for 2 to 3 days per week in our supportive multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality eye care to the people of the Wirral.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training

  • BSc (Hons) ophthalmic optics or optometry
  • Registered with the GOC
  • Minimum of three years post qualification experience
  • Undertaken advanced clinical training through continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Higher degree or College of Optometrists higher qualifications
  • Experience of working in hospital optometry

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Experience of clinical teaching, supervision, or staff training
  • Evidence of leadership skills

Desirable

  • Specialist knowledge of hospital optometry

  • Competent in all areas of core hospital optometry services
  • Good presentation skills
