Job Summary

The Education Authority seeks a skilled Vehicle Maintenance Specialist to join its team. As a key member of the Vehicle Maintenance Service, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and economical maintenance of motor vehicles, mechanical handling equipment, and mobile plant/equipment.

Main Responsibilities

  • Examine and inspect vehicles and equipment to identify any defects or issues, and report your findings to the line manager.
  • Service, maintain, and repair vehicles and equipment, using the necessary tools and equipment, and adhering to standard hour targets.
  • Interpret and implement technical service data and statutory maintenance standards to ensure all work is performed to the highest standards.
  • Attend to broken-down or immobilized vehicles and equipment, using proper techniques to minimize damage and risk.
  • Manufacture simple component parts, using hand tools or machinery, to a high standard of accuracy and performance.
  • Apply diagnostic techniques to determine the cause of malfunctions, and recommend improvements or modifications to enhance safety and reliability.
  • Supervise and instruct semi-skilled staff, apprentices, and other staff as required.
  • Attend training courses to stay up-to-date with the latest vehicle and equipment technologies.
  • Use safe working practices and procedures at all times, and maintain a tidy personal appearance.
  • Cooperate in the introduction of management information systems.
  • Carry out all duties in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978, and other relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Achieve vehicle availability targets in accordance with agreed levels.
  • Undertake any other duties or responsibilities commensurate with the mechanic's experience and ability that may reasonably be required by the Foreperson.

Performance Criteria

  • Cooperate with the agreed Scheme for the Provision of Maximum Flexibility among Motor Trade Employees in Transport Depots.
  • Complete work within specified standard working hour targets.
  • Complete work consistently to a high standard.
  • Display initiative in diagnosing technical problems and be effective in overcoming problems.
  • Attend broken-down or immobilized vehicles and equipment without danger to the public and with the risk of causing additional damage.
  • Be well-versed in the application of vehicle legislation and the Education Authority Vehicle Maintenance Service policies and procedures.
  • Communicate skills and knowledge effectively to staff under training.

Reporting

  • Comply with the working week arrangement as defined by the Workshop Foreperson in accordance with the needs of the service.
  • Utilize the time-keeping process in an accurate manner and in accordance with the procedures laid down by the Workshop Foreperson.
  • Complete documents and records as decided by the Workshop Foreperson, including a Job Costing System.
