About the Role

This Defence Claims Specialist position offers an exciting opportunity to join our Motor & Casualty Department in Manchester or Liverpool office. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for handling litigated small claims and fast-track cases, working closely with Fee Earners to achieve exceptional results.

You will deal with a caseload of defendant litigated small claims and fast track files, as well as MOJ files, and assist other Fee Earners as required. With an average case load of 100 files, you will be expected to manage your time effectively and work efficiently to meet deadlines.

  • File Handling: Handle own case load of defendant litigated small claims and fast track files, and MOJ files.
  • Delegated and Non-Delegated Files: Competently handle files on a delegated and non-delegated basis, complying with client SLAs.
  • Quantum Review: Review quantum, valuing general and special damages, and finalise case plans, including advice on next steps.
  • Case Referrals: Refer cases for supervision and guidance to ensure correct procedure and process are followed.
  • Liaising with Third Parties: Enter into telephone negotiations, liaise with third-party solicitors and insurers, own insurer clients, and lay clients, recording the outcome of these approaches.
  • Drafting Documents: Draft applications, offers, proposed orders, directions, etc.
  • Court Hearings: Attend telephone conferences, applications, and court hearings.
  • Time Management: Work to court deadlines and manage time effectively using organisational skills and a case management system.
  • Case Progression: See cases through from commencement to conclusion, dealing with them in a cost-effective manner.
  • Solicitors' Accounts Rules: Ensure all cases are dealt with in compliance with Solicitors' Accounts Rules and Law.
Requirements

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • A law degree/GDL/LPC or equivalent qualifications.
  • Previous file handling experience or worked in the insurance industry.
  • Experience of claim handling a litigated caseload, preferably defendant.
  • Knowledge of the CPR, SRA Code of Conduct, and their application.
  • Familiarity with medical reports.
  • The ability to meet/exceed billing targets.
  • A client-centric approach and excellent client care skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Experience of communicating and working with clients.
  • The ability to take initiative, work autonomously, and as part of a team.
