Expert Data Analyst for Weather Modeling

Millennium Management LLC is seeking an experienced Data Scientist to join its Commodities team in New York. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in meteorology, statistics, and computer science, with expertise in building high-resolution numerical weather prediction models. This role requires the ability to analyze and manage vast amounts of data from various sources, develop advanced statistical techniques, and communicate complex ideas effectively to investment teams.

Main Responsibilities
  • Analyze large datasets from market and alternative data vendors to identify trends and correlations.
  • Develop and maintain high-resolution NWP models such as MPAS and WRF for use across short-term power desks.
  • Collaborate with the quant team on weather-related projects, including demand and wind generation modeling.
  • Provide data insights and recommendations to investment teams, ensuring accurate and timely information.
  • Write efficient code to process and normalize large datasets.
  • Back test datasets to assess their correlation to company KPIs.
  • Work with the data sourcing team to identify new data products and vendors.
Requirements
  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Meteorology, Statistics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or related field.
  • At least 2+ years of experience working with meteorological variables, concepts, data providers, and industry standard practices.
  • Proficient programming skills in Python, with hands-on experience with ETL processes and SQL queries.
  • Experience with GRIB, NetCDF, and Zarr file formats.
  • Strong understanding of AI/ML techniques and data assimilation.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $175,000 to $250,000, specific to New York. Millennium offers a comprehensive benefits package and discretionary performance bonus, with total compensation tailored to individual experience and qualifications.
