About the Role

As a seasoned sub-editor, you'll be responsible for editing copy to a high standard, ensuring all articles align with the tone and style of each brand. You'll work closely with the Group Chief Sub-editor to meet deadlines and maintain the highest level of quality.

  • Ensure copy flows efficiently through the production system to meet deadlines.
  • Manage the flatplan, updating it regularly and communicating changes to the team.
  • Complete proofs to press-ready standard.
  • Maintain awareness of the different tones and styles of each magazine within the Homes Group.
  • Assist the Group Chief Sub-editor in taking responsibility for meeting deadlines.
  • Update the flatplan and communicate changes to the team.
  • Take responsibility for final preparation of pages, signing off finals, and sending to press.
  • Prepare copy for layout, writing captions, headlines, and introductions as appropriate.
  • Build relationships with the art department to discuss layouts and design specifications.
  • Liaise with editorial departments and the picture team to ensure accuracy and quality.
  • Lead weekly production meetings.
  • Be responsible for adding and checking folios, page furniture, and bylines.
  • Liaise with the legal department to ensure all pages are safe legally.
  • Work with industry-standard toolsets and adhere to structured workflow systems.
  • Deputise for the Group Chief Sub-editor, including distributing work and monitoring production flow.
  • Fact-check copy according to agreed guidelines.
  • Contribute to the digital offering.
  • Represent Hearst UK and its values.

About You

  • Demonstrable sub-editing experience.
  • Prior experience working on a national magazine or newspaper with knowledge of the homes market.
  • Knowledge of the print production process.
  • Good communication and diplomacy skills.
  • Good writing ability.
  • Able to work accurately and organized.
  • Experience using Adobe and InDesign.
  • Able to work under pressure and be assertive.
  • Flexible attitude to work.
