Laser Safety Officer Job Description

The Department of Physics at Imperial College London is seeking a highly skilled Laser Safety Officer to join our team. As a key member of our department, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe use of lasers in research and teaching activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct laser risk assessments and develop lab local rules to ensure a safe working environment
  • Deliver laser safety training to research groups and teaching staff
  • Coordinate and review laser safety activities across the department
  • Advise the Head of Department Office on current best practices in laser use and safety
Requirements:
  • Education to degree level in laser physics or a related field, or equivalent experience in an industrial setting
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration with colleagues and external contacts
  • Experience in day-to-day supervision of research students and researchers in a laboratory environment
  • Ability to operate and maintain hazardous lasers and complete laser safety-related calculations
  • Understanding of hazards, risks, and control measures associated with lasers and their safe use
