Job Overview

This is a 9 + 1 PA full-time Consultant Haematologist position within the Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust. The appointee will be part of a team of 8 Consultants working across the Trust, providing a comprehensive Haematology service to patients.

Main Duties
  • Provide a comprehensive Haematology service to patients.
  • Comply with the GMC's guidance on 'Good Medical Practice' at all times, ensuring patient confidentiality is maintained.
  • Undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan, in agreement with Clinical Leads.
  • Be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources.
  • Participate in the Trust's Statutory & Mandatory training programme.
  • Be responsible for the Clinical Management of in and outpatients under their care.
  • Demonstrate flexibility according to departmental requirements, after discussion with the Clinical Lead.
Working for Our Organisation

The clinical Haematology services at Epsom and St Helier comprise an integrated service with joint Clinical Leads Dr Sneha Muthalali and Dr Caroline Ebdon.

The Department has improved its links with the Royal Marsden Hospital (RMH) in recent years, and RMH now provides funding for Pathology Reporting within the Centre for Molecular Pathology (HMDS).

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

The appointee will contribute to the clinical care of patients referred to the Haematology Department at both St Helier and Epsom General Hospitals.

Participate in 3 out-patient clinics per week.

The appointee may participate in the clinical rotas for the management of inpatients at St Helier Hospital, but will not have their own dedicated beds for admission of patients at Epsom General Hospital.

The appointee will have an office with their own desk and personal computer, with access to a microscope, including 2- and 6-headed microscopes for teaching purposes.

Dedicated secretarial support is provided by shared medical secretaries/patient pathway co-ordinators.

Responsible for advising all laboratory users, including general practitioners, on general Haematology problems, as required.

This post also encompasses a Clinical Lead Role relevant to the candidate's area of interest/expertise, to which 1 PA is allocated.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

  • Hold a medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC.
  • Full and specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview).
  • Appropriate higher medical qualification i.e. MRCP or show evidence of equivalent qualification, FRCPath or equivalent.

Desirable criteria

  • BSc or MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research.

Clinical Experience

  • Broad expertise with high standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty.
  • Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
  • Expertise in the diagnosis and management of patients with Haematological malignancies and general Haematological disorders.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice.
  • Able to contribute to the full range of skills required for the on-call rota for the specialty.

Management & Administrative Experience

  • Evidence of participation in Audit and understanding of underlying principles.
  • Broad range of IT skills. Has attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT.
  • Supervision of postgraduate trainees.
  • Personal time management skills.
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
  • Ability to organise in-patient and out-patient waiting lists.

Desirable criteria

  • Familiarity with issues of service organisation and development.

Teaching Experience

  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
  • Ability to teach clinical skills.

Desirable criteria

  • Teaching skills course.
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates/post graduates.
  • Experience of supervising junior doctors.
  • Experience of teaching lay groups and other staff groups.
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research.

Research Experience

  • Experience of clinical trials.
  • Knowledge of the principles involved in research.
  • Ability to contribute to change management.
  • Ability to apply research findings to clinical problems.
  • Ability to critically review research.
