About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional clinician with a strong track record in dental education to join our team as a Senior Clinical Academic in Dental Education. As a key member of our education team, you will play a vital role in shaping the future of dental education and contributing to the development of our undergraduate dental curricula.

As a leader in dental education, you will work closely with colleagues to deliver, manage, and develop our modern and innovative undergraduate dental curricula. You will also have opportunities to contribute to the wider educational activity of the School, tailored to your experience, qualifications, and interests.

As a leader in the School's education team, you will help shape strategies for the development of the discipline and contribute to leadership in the delivery of excellent education and student experience. You will work with the School leadership to realise our strategic ambitions and be responsible to the Head of School.

Opportunities exist to develop your passion in teaching and, where appropriate, relevant research. Collaboration is strongly encouraged between dental specialties, and you will be encouraged to build on our strong links with teachers and researchers in other academic disciplines across the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and wider University.

Main Duties of the Job
  • Supporting the School's Director of Education in academic leadership, including setting the School's strategic direction in teaching and assessment.
  • Being a key link between the School's leadership and clinical teaching staff to ensure our educational strategy is embedded across all of the School's teaching activities.
  • Ensuring quality in the School's provision of education, including chairing relevant committees, supporting year leads, supporting the annual programme review process, and, where appropriate, representing the School at Faculty and/or University education meetings.
  • Contributing to leadership in the School's implementation of the General Dental Council's Safe Practitioner learning outcomes.
  • Contributing to and/or leading development of the School's strategies on digital dentistry and sustainability.
  • Contributing to and/or leading widening participation activities and student recruitment.
  • Supporting the School's Strategic Leadership Team in decision-making in response to internal and external opportunities and challenges to ensure our educational provision remains student-focussed, high quality, and financially sustainable.
  • For appropriately qualified and experienced candidates, leading the School's developing interests in pedagogic research.
  • Supporting junior colleagues in developing their careers in dental education, including through direct line management, and contributing towards strategic succession planning.

Bristol Dental School leads multi-disciplinary research in laboratory, clinical, and population sciences. Our research groups and laboratories are based in the Dorothy Hodgkin Building and the Dental School, facilitating close working relationships with clinical researchers and complementary research activity aligned to the Medical School, ensuring a key critical mass and world-leading research quality.

We have a successful strategy for developing the next generation of clinical academics through formal Integrated Academic & Clinical Training schemes, with researchers working across world-leading Dental and Medical research teams.

Bristol Dental School was the first UK Dental School to hold the Silver Award, and we are proud to continue to hold a Silver Athena Swan award highlighting our positive approach to equal opportunities.

We continue to make improvements to working culture and to foster collaboration and team working within our new Dental School.

Person Specification
  • To have and maintain full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council.
  • Royal College of Surgeons membership (e.g., MFDS or equivalent), or Fellowship of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (e.g., FDS or equivalent), or other relevant postgraduate clinical qualification.
  • Membership of relevant professional organisations.
  • Fellowship/Senior Fellowship of Higher Education Academy and/or academic teaching qualification.
  • Postgraduate academic qualifications (e.g., MSc, DDS, PhD, MClinDent).
Experience
  • Substantial recent experience of leadership in a University Dental School setting.
  • Track record of effective leadership of teams.
  • Experience of teaching, clinical supervision, and assessment of dental students.
  • Excellent organisation and interpersonal skills, and ability to resolve conflict in a positive manner.
  • Experience in curriculum/course design and management.
  • The ability to build collaborations with colleagues in complementary areas of work.
  • High-level written and verbal communication, including for example, writing teaching material, delivering lectures, tutorials, and conference presentations.
  • Good level of IT skills.
  • Capacity to work in a range of educational settings and situations.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and prioritise conflicting commitments.
  • Awareness of clinical governance issues, and the need to participate in such activities related to all clinical work.
  • Abilities to provide pastoral support to undergraduate and postgraduate students as a personal tutor, including signposting to specialist services where appropriate.
  • Evidence of external grant funding.
  • Evidence of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Track record of working to increase impact of research.
  • Experience of developing and introducing new academic programmes.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, at all levels.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and their relatives/carers, clinical colleagues, support staff, and other colleagues.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi-professional basis with all levels of staff both within and across divisions.
  • Strong team building and motivational skills with evidence of successful delivery of change.
Other Criteria
  • A willingness to contribute to the wider administrative activities of the School as outlined in the job description and additional duties as requested by the Head of School.
  • To contribute to the civic responsibilities of the Dental School, Faculty, and University as outlined in our Vision for the University of Bristol.
  • A willingness to contribute to occasional out-of-hours (e.g., weekends, evenings) activities to deliver community engagement, outreach, and student recruitment activities.
