Senior Permitting Officer - Water Quality

Are you passionate about safeguarding the environment and ensuring compliance with regulatory obligations? Do you have a strong background in environmental permitting and a keen eye for detail? We're seeking a highly skilled Senior Permitting Officer to join our Water Quality team at the Environment Agency.

About the Role

As a Senior Permitting Officer, you will play a critical role in determining complex applications for environmental permits, ensuring that activities that have the potential to pollute are properly regulated. You will work closely with permit applicants, including multinational companies and water & sewerage companies, to provide high-quality and risk-based environmental permitting decisions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Determine complex applications for environmental permits, ensuring compliance with Environmental Permitting Regulations, Water Resources Act, and Water Industry Act
  • Provide pre-application advice and guidance to permit applicants
  • Collaborate with professionals from various disciplines, including water quality experts and permit officers
  • Support the development of policies and procedures for environmental permitting
  • Contribute to the development of training programs for permit officers
Requirements
  • Strong background in environmental permitting, with a focus on water quality
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and make informed decisions
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with permit applicants and colleagues
  • Ability to work under pressure, meeting tight deadlines and managing multiple priorities
  • Knowledge of water quality issues and policies, including the Habitats Directive and Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
