Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist to lead the Emergency Department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. The post holder will be a dynamic team leader who can drive the service forward through the evolving service.

We offer a supportive working environment with regular supervision opportunities to explore strategic developments of the service. Various opportunities for learning and developing clinical and managerial skills are also available.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder will be responsible for leading, developing and supporting all therapy staff within the Emergency and Acute Medicine Service:

  • To manage a highly complex caseload within the integrated discharge team using advanced clinical reasoning, critical thinking, reflection and analysis to support assessments using a client centred approach.
  • To act as a specialist advisor to the integrated discharge team regarding Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy services and roles.
  • To lead a team of both Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists, providing leadership for senior and junior staff and Therapy Assistants through supervision, appraisals and performance management.
  • To act as a clinical source of expertise and advice being actively involved in leading on Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance in the integrated discharge team.
  • To support the management of IDT and the Therapy Services as required by the Head Occupational Therapist and/or Physiotherapist.
  • To lead on development and change management of the IDT service within A&E and acute floor.
  • To be actively involved in professional activities within your profession and outside the profession, e.g. multi-disciplinary forums and networks.

Person Specification

The following skills and experience are required for this role:

  • Knowledge of specialist adaptive and manual handling equipment, wheelchairs and specialist seating.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and under pressure whilst remaining calm.
  • High level of clinical skill in specialty area and ability to teach those skills (to own and other professions).
People Management & Development
  • Proven experience in developing and providing education and teaching programmes to other professionals and students.
  • Able to handle sensitive and contentious information regarding staff and patients.
  • Able to strategically plan and develop the specialty area within national service frameworks and NICE guidelines.
  • Experience of reviewing staffing structures and delivering service changes.
Qualifications
  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy.
  • HCPC Registration.
  • Masters level or equivalent training in specialist area or evidence of significant practical experience, research or publication in specialist area.
Experience
  • Experience of supervising less experienced staff and students.
  • Clinical experience in physical disability in acute or community services relevant to the responsibilities of the role at an advanced level.
  • Involvement in carrying out clinical audit and research including the coordination and evaluation of, and the use of findings to make service developments.
  • Proven leadership skills in managing and developing teams.
  • Experience of operational management of staff e.g. personnel procedures and handling complaints.
