Job Title: Senior Electrical Design Engineer

GRIDSERVE is seeking a highly skilled Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing and verifying electrical infrastructure for our Electric Forecourts, Solar Hybrid & Hubs sites.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and review electrical infrastructure designs for Electric Vehicle Charging Forecourts, including Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems, and Hubs.
  • Review and approve high voltage design from ICPs and low voltage DC & AC designs from GRIDSERVE Design Engineers, ensuring projects meet specifications, company, and H&S standards.
  • Support the design process, including electrical specification, electrical schematics, cable schedules, AutoCAD drawings, cable calculation reports, and protective device settings.
  • Verify and review designs for low voltage DC, AC (MV and LV), including Comms and Controls using Amtech, AutoCAD, MS Excel, and NBS Specification writing software.
  • Identify technical solutions to meet the needs of fast technological advances in electric vehicle charging technology.
  • Work with teams across the business and external suppliers to ensure designs are delivered to specification, within budget, and within a timely manner.
  • Ensure quality of design meets CDM requirements, local/international standards, and GRIDSERVE technical standards.
  • Lead technical solutions to meet the needs of advancing Electric Vehicle Charging Technology, Renewable Energy Systems, and Energy Storage Systems.
  • Carry out electrical calculations, cable sizing, earthing calculations, and provide reports as required.
  • Prepare cable schedules, cable calculations reports, single line diagrams, and general arrangement drawing for duct routes, earthing, electrical equipment layouts as required.
  • Represent engineering at technical & project meetings.
  • Liaise with Architects, Structural Engineers, ICPs, MEP Consultants, DNOs to ensure design compliance.
  • Connections Team with compliance, commercial tenders, planning applications, including grid applications as required.
  • Assist with defining monitoring system requirements, supporting installation and commissioning activities.
  • Research new technologies and provide improved project design, including equipment specification.
  • May be required to conduct site surveys to check project feasibility and take all relevant measurements and information to prepare the final ready-to-build designs.
Requirements:
  • Significant experience working in a similar technical role on HV (11 & 33kV), LV & DC electrical systems, renewables, energy storage projects.
  • Experience in designing DC & AC (LV) systems, understanding of electrical schematics, PV systems, layout drawings, and electrical networks.
  • Specialist experience in BESS, PV, and/or DNO/IDNO networks.
  • Experience working in senior roles leading teams, acting as client expert, and acting as mentor to junior engineers.
Desirable Skills and Abilities:
  • Advanced understanding & proficiency of HV Grid studies, HV Distribution design, HV Protection Coordination, and HV earthing technical processes.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding in designing DC & AC (LV) systems, electrical schematics, calculations, and analyses, PV/renewables designs.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of H&S regulations, design regulations, electrical standards, and CDM (where applicable) regulations.
  • Working knowledge of Amtech/Electrical OM or similar and AutoCAD.
  • Working knowledge of solar, battery storage, including their specifications, cost, efficiency, code compliance, performance, and reliability.
  • Good level of understanding of customer substation power and control design.
  • Knowledge of safety features, grounding, disconnects, system testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Analytical mindset with ability to analyse and interpret data and perform performance review of working systems.
  • Attention to detail and excellent problem-solving skills and strong focus on accuracy.
  • Ability to interpret topographical drawings and survey data.
  • Competent applying appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, and maintain engineering processes, systems, services, and products.
  • Competent using a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology.
  • Competent in providing technical and commercial management for assigned tasks.
