Job Overview

The dynamic physiotherapy department at King's College Hospital is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic physiotherapist to join the multidisciplinary paediatric team. The post holder will join one of the four rotations below, with opportunities to gain experience amongst wider clinical paediatric teams:

  1. Respiratory including PICU, HDU, liver and multi visceral transplant, as well as support the general surgery and orthopaedic inpatients.
  2. Neurology, neurosurgery and neuro-rehabilitation patients within PICU, HDU and the neuro wards.
  3. Cystic fibrosis and long-term respiratory conditions including bronchiectasis and long-term ventilation, both inpatient and outpatient and may include clinic visits to hospitals in the King's CF region.
  4. Neonates including the level 3 neonatal unit at King's College Hospital, Special Care Baby Unit at the Princess Royal University Hospital, and attendance at neurodevelopmental follow up clinics.
Main Duties

To ensure delivery of a high standard of efficient and effective physiotherapy assessment, treatment and intervention for all patients (age 0 – 19) designated to him/her as inpatients or outpatients.

To teach and develop junior physiotherapists, physiotherapy students and physiotherapy assistants within the paediatric team.

To undertake an evidence-based project throughout each rotation to further clinical practice of self and the team, and to enhance patient care.

To take part in the on call and weekend rota.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work including management of clinical risk, knowledge of indications and precautions of chosen techniques in line with national and trust clinical guidelines, protocols and pathways where they exist.
  • To use recognised outcome measures to evaluate the effect of the physiotherapy interventions and ensure the treatment programmes are progressing appropriately.
  • To carry a designated clinical caseload including complex patients and prioritise that work efficiently taking into account clinical and service priorities using specialist knowledge to underpin decisions.
  • To work closely with MDT colleagues, providing a holistic approach to the management of paediatric patients and infants, within acute and follow up clinics.
  • To provide individual patient equipment as required e.g. walking aids, splints, nebulisers and airway clearance adjuncts. To issue such equipment with due regard to safety of the equipment, and in line with legal, national and local guidelines.
  • To be responsible for the standard of physiotherapy carried out by physiotherapy assistants or technical instructors working with you.
  • To ensure planned discharge from hospital including referral to ongoing services and provide advice to parents / guardians on the correct management and treatment of the child or infant.
  • The post requires a flexible approach to working and requires the post holder to be an active member of the on-call, weekend duty rotas, and cover of statutory and public holidays including working as lone physiotherapy practitioner at night.
  • Undertake other clinical duties as requested by the Clinical Lead Physiotherapist or Physiotherapy Manager.
  • To be aware and follow local and national policies with regards to safeguarding, manual handling and health and safety.
