Role Overview

The Electronic Hardware Team Lead is a highly skilled engineer responsible for leading, mentoring, and managing a team of engineers. This role requires exceptional technical expertise, strong leadership skills, and the ability to make informed decisions based on evidence from direct reports.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electronic engineering, with experience in designing and developing complex electronic hardware systems. They will be able to lead planning, architecture, development, and validation of new hardware designs, as well as mentor team members on technical matters.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead a team of engineers, ranging from experts in analogue, digital, and PCB design to apprentices or junior members of the team.
• Inspire, coach, and lead direct reports to enable them to achieve individual and business goals.
• Resource allocation - Understand who in their team is best placed to achieve the product's goals.
• Team administration, including goal setting and performance reviews.
• Lead planning, architecture, development, and validation of new hardware designs.
• Apply risk/mutation techniques at all stages of the development cycle.
• Mentor team members on technical matters to ensure they stay effective in their roles.
• Drive technical conversations on products and cross-engineering improvements.
• Investigate challenging and complex hardware issues, both in assistance to more junior members and directly with other areas of the business.

Requirements

• 2:1 or above in a relevant Engineering degree, such as Electronics, but not limited to.
• Experience in a manufacturing company, with a strong understanding of the consequences of decisions made and the importance of risk mitigation.
• Expertise in low power but highly complex digital systems involving a range of digital architectures, including embedded Linux and FPGA's.
• Competent in low noise, low power analogue receiver design as well as high voltage transmitter designs.
• Competent in actively simulating designs to conform to the mantra 'right first time.'
• Competent in understanding the principles of designing to meet EN60945 and other relevant standards.
• Competent in creating circuits and having basic knowledge of PCB design techniques.
• Advanced leadership skills, with the ability to lead others by coaching them to make the right choices.
• Advanced communication and team working skills, with the ability to proactively communicate and work effectively with other team members, and members of other teams throughout the business to achieve project deliverables.
• Competent in holding one-to-ones, appraisals, career planning, and knowing how to listen and provide constructive coaching.
• Basic writing skills in embedded software, with the ability to write code to enable board bring-up and ensure testing is complete prior to hand over to the Software Team.
