Lead Specialist Nursing Practitioner in Colorectal Care

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Lead Specialist Nursing Practitioner to join our multidisciplinary team at North Bristol NHS Trust. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality care to patients with colorectal cancers.
About the Role:
This is an exciting opportunity to work in a leading role, driving excellence in patient care and contributing to the development of our colorectal cancer service. You will work closely with our multidisciplinary team to ensure a coordinated quality service, preparing, presenting, and leading discussions in multidisciplinary team meetings on your specialist area.
Main Responsibilities:
- To provide specialist nursing advice underpinned by theory and experience to support patients and their families/carers.
- To act as a specialist practitioner, planning, implementing, and evaluating programmes of care in collaboration with senior colleagues achieved through systematic and holistic assessment, personalised care planning, onwards referral, and discharge to primary care teams.
- To provide patients and staff with specialist advice to manage complex symptoms.
- To develop and share expertise within the multidisciplinary team.
- To develop and utilise skills to act as a resource in the care of patients' needs, ensuring an optimum level of service to patients and their carers.
- To work closely with community and network, other hospital and community staff to ensure an effective seamless service.
- To present in the colorectal weekly Multidisciplinary team meeting based on the Southmead site.
- To transcribe radiology requests on ICE following successful completion of the IR(M)ER training course.
- To deploy high-level skills to provide effective communication systems of support for patients, including breaking bad news and difficult conversations.
- To develop and utilise skills needed to embed patient and public involvement within the sphere of specialist nursing practice.
- To ensure that all patients and families are aware of all treatment options, including clinical trials.
- To work as a patient advocate, helping to negotiate the patient journey and ensuring optimum care is provided to each patient.
- To nurture and maintain links with other healthcare agencies and organisations providing support and information to patients.
- To adhere to and promote in others the importance of infection control guidelines and procedures.
- To act as a positive role model for nurses in the hospital through the demonstration of excellent communication and clinical skills.
- To expertly deliver complex sensitive condition-related information to patients and relatives.
- To provide specialist support and advice in clinical areas, wards, and outpatients, to optimise quality improvement opportunities.
- To analyse and respond to challenging and complex clinical situations utilising specialist knowledge and analytical and judgemental skills to assess a range of options to formulate solutions and recommendations.
- To act as a change agent, using skills that will motivate and reassure staff through negotiation and training, to facilitate the change process.
Requirements:
- Registered General Nurse – Level One and current NMC registration.
- Evidence of study at Degree level degree in related health topic or willingness to undertake.
- Evidence of formal ongoing professional development.
- Recognised teaching qualification.
- Significant post-registration experience in colorectal surgery.
- Evidence of recent teaching experience.
- Experience of involvement in change and development within a multidisciplinary team context.
- Knowledge of the care and management of patients with colorectal cancers.
- Knowledge of national and local developments in relation to the living with and beyond cancer programme.
- Up-to-date knowledge and understanding of national and local cancer issues and developments.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in dealing with patients, relatives, and colleagues.
- Good assessment skills.
- Proven presentation and teaching skills.
- Self-motivated and ability to work without direct supervision.
- Ability to cope with emotional issues presented in the course of work and to support others.
