About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Mandarin Language Specialist to join our team at MI5. As a key member of our intelligence agency, you will play a critical role in safeguarding the UK by providing linguistic expertise and cultural knowledge.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing accurate and timely translations of Mandarin language materials
  • Conducting research on Chinese culture, ideology, and politics to support intelligence operations
  • Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to direct projects and drive forward investigations

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Mandarin language and culture, as well as excellent analytical and communication skills. A good understanding of Chinese history, religion, and politics is also essential.

Salary and Benefits

The starting salary for this role is £37,281 - £43,490 per annum, plus the possibility to qualify for additional language allowances once in role. Upon successful completion of the 6-month probationary period, you will be eligible for an additional payment of £3,000 per annum in recognition of your language skill.

Requirements

To be considered for this role, you will need to possess:

  • A strong background in Mandarin language and culture
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills
  • A good understanding of Chinese history, religion, and politics
  • Confident reading, writing, speaking, and listening to Mandarin

As part of the selection process, you will need to pass a language proficiency test by reading and translating newspaper articles and broadcasts.
