We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Transport Manager to join our team at Biffa Waste Services Limited. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient management of our fleet of vehicles, while maintaining the highest standards of health and safety, environmental compliance, and customer service.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Traffic Office, ensuring compliance with health and safety, environmental, and operator licence regulations.
  • Deliver first-class customer service and cultivate an environment where continuous improvement is the norm.
  • Lead a team of traffic dispatchers, drivers, and operatives, providing guidance and support to ensure the achievement of key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Effectively manage a fleet of vehicles, including liaison with fleet management, safe vehicle operations, wheel security, and monitoring of vehicle gross weights.
  • Ensure compliance with transport and environmental legislation, including third-party insurance claims.
  • Play an integral role in supporting the management of on-going cost control, actively seeking to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.
  • Ensure all aspects of health and safety are strictly adhered to, including near miss reporting and emergency procedures.
  • Review near miss reporting to ensure a first-class customer experience and completion of associated activities.
  • Complete all administrative tasks associated with the role, including work sheets and tachograph records.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers.
Requirements:
  • Extensive experience as a Traffic Manager or similar role in services or logistics industry.
  • National CPC is essential.
  • Experience of people and health and safety management within a unionised and multi-shift environment.
  • Understanding of lean methodology and ability to work to clearly defined KPIs.
  • Proven experience of successful resource management/cost control.
  • Knowledge of transport legislation.
  • Knowledge of existing and impending environmental and health and safety legislation.
  • Strong knowledge of the local area.
  • Ability to work within a commercially driven and time-critical environment.
  • Strong commercial background.
  • Experience of operational line management, ideally in a trade union environment.
  • Previous exposure to managing in a labour-intensive, multi-shift environment.
  • Ability to communicate with conviction, plan with precision, and work well with others.
  • Minimum GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths, with A-Levels or a Degree being desirable.
  • Willingness to travel within the UK for business meetings and project work.
