Job Overview

The Ashmolean Museum is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to take up the role of Mountmaker in its Projects & Exhibitions Technical team.

This is a permanent, full-time position working 36.5 hours per week.*0.6 FTE / 21.9 hours per week could be negotiated for the right candidate. The successful applicant will provide specialist mountmaking expertise and planning, managing and implementing mountmaking programmes across the Ashmolean's collections.

About the Role

As Mountmaker, you will be responsible for designing and fabricating mounts principally in metal, as well as other conservation friendly materials, for a wide range of museum objects, especially those of a sensitive or fragmentary nature. You will develop and maintain a mountmaking workshop, including specifying and maintain mountmaking equipment and maintain stock levels of consumables.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designing and fabricating mounts for a wide range of museum objects
  • Providing specialist mountmaking expertise and planning, managing and implementing mountmaking programmes
  • Maintaining a mountmaking workshop, including specifying and maintaining equipment and consumables
  • Working with a range of museum staff and external bodies
  • Occasional support to other technicians as required

Benefits

This role offers a competitive salary estimated to be around £32,000 - £40,000 per annum, depending on experience, plus benefits such as health insurance and a pension scheme.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

  • A strong background in mountmaking, with experience in designing and fabricating mounts in metal and other conservation friendly materials
  • Excellent communication and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Basic Disclosure and Barring Service check due to handling of high value collection items
