National Organiser (Broadcasting) Job Description

Based in the Head office of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), located in Central London, the National Organiser (Broadcasting) will head up the department dealing with broadcasting members within the union.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with broadcasting members, both collectively and individually, through regular meetings, conferences, forums, emails, and social media.
  • Develop and implement recruitment strategies to attract and retain broadcasting journalists across the union, working closely with lay reps and activists to establish and organize chapels in consultation with the Broadcasting Industrial Council (BIC) and other organizations.
  • Negotiate collective agreements, pay claims, and represent the interests of broadcasting members in cooperation with other organisers.
  • Provide comprehensive written reports to the union's National Executive Council (NEC) on industrial and workplace issues affecting broadcasting members.
  • Servicing of the union's elected Broadcasting Industrial Council (BIC) and other committees, councils, or group chapels as directed by the General Secretary.
  • Lobby and campaign on key policy issues affecting broadcasting journalists in the private sector and throughout public service broadcasting.
  • Ensure adherence to all NUJ policies, particularly those addressing equality and ethical issues.
  • Authorise broadcasting membership expenses in accordance with the NUJ payment policy procedure, with full oversight of the Head of Finance & Membership.
Training Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate and tailor Trade Union training for broadcasting members via the union's central training programme.
  • Develop and deliver training on the current media industry and knowledge of the issues facing broadcasting workers across the different parts of the industry.

This role requires a strong understanding of the media industry, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The successful candidate will be able to deal sympathetically and efficiently with collective and individual problems and grievances, and represent individual workers and chapels effectively.

Job Title: National Organiser (Broadcasting) | Department: Broadcasting | Location: London

Staff Chapel: NUJ | Grade: National Organiser | Reports to: NUJ General Secretary | Contract Type: Permanent | Working Time: Full-Time, 5 days a week, 35 hours a week including lunch

Hybrid Working: a minimum of 3 days in the London office and the remaining 2 days working from your permanent residence. There may be a requirement to work 5 days in the office, dependant on organisational needs.
