About the Role:


We are seeking a skilled Maintenance Operative/Handy Person to join our team at Ashburton House Care Home.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as minor plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work.
  • Undertake painting and decorating as required.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the premises to identify and resolve issues.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Conduct necessary repairs and preventive maintenance to keep the infrastructure in good condition.
  • Assist with maintaining outdoor areas, such as gardens and pathways.
  • Respond quickly in the event of an emergency, liaise with and provide assistance to emergency services.
  • Support with routine inspections for fire safety equipment and alarm systems.
  • Ensure equipment is kept clean, well maintained and is in safe working order.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with our residents, handle potential issues or concerns swiftly and professionally.

Essential Requirements:



  • Proven experience as a Maintenance Operative or similar role.
  • Skilled in the use of hand and electrical tools.
  • Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing, and heating systems.
  • Good physical condition and strength with the ability to work in awkward spaces.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance processes and methods.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle emergencies swiftly and calmly.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Understanding and commitment to the health, safety, and welfare of our residents.
  • Willingness to undergo DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

Desirable Requirements:



  • Qualification in a trade (such as NVQ, City & Guilds) would be a distinct advantage.
  • Previous experience in a care home or similar environment.
