About the Role

The Lead Civil Engineer is a key position supporting the development and delivery of the Buchan Offshore Wind project, reporting directly to the Technical and Engineering Director.

This role is responsible for the design and development of the civil engineering aspects of the onshore electrical infrastructure and associated works for the Buchan Offshore Wind project. The project involves a HVAC substation, circa 30 km of cable route, and cable landing with a number of large-scale horizontal directional drilling projects along the route, amongst wider works.

The project is currently finalizing design to support the consenting process and is progressing to concept design phase stage. The Lead Civil Engineer will progress and develop the civil engineering design through concept design and beyond, working with an integrated engineering, planning, and project team to identify a deliverable and derisked engineering solution for this critical infrastructure project.

The role requires a strong technical background in civil engineering design delivery and/or civil engineering design management, with experience in working in major project environments. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively with a range of people across engineering and non-engineering disciplines, and be an open and collaborative team member.

The Lead Civil Engineer will lead a number of critical aspects of the project, including onshore substation civil design and construction management, export cable landfall and onshore cable route design, and supporting offshore civil engineering tasks within other work packages.

The project is an agile and integrated engineering and development team, and the Lead Civil Engineer will have opportunities to support wider aspects of the project design, where there are transferable skills. The company provides training and development opportunities to allow the candidate to broaden their knowledge of offshore wind and offshore engineering, and to enable them to influence the direction of this pioneering project.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Onshore substation civil design and construction management.
  2. Export Cable landfall and onshore cable route design.
  3. Supporting offshore civil engineering tasks within other work packages.
  4. Delivering in-house engineering tasks to inform critical decision making.
  5. Developing the onshore engineering roadmap and programme development in close collaboration with other relevant disciplines/packages.
  6. Managing delivery of work packages from consultants, designers, and contractors.
  7. Representing the project in a number of public forums.
  8. Onshore HSE and CDM compliance in support of Buchan Offshore Wind's duties as Principal Designer.
Candidate Requirements

The role is anticipated to be fulfilled by an experienced Civil Engineer who has demonstrable experience in the design and delivery of major onshore infrastructure projects. While experience of electrical transmission infrastructure and/or energy projects is desirable, it is considered that experience on heavy civil engineering projects such as bridges, highways, railways, and other major infrastructure would provide very relevant and transferable skills.

  1. BEng or MEng or equivalent degree in Civil Engineering.
  2. Chartered Civil Engineer (or ability to provide strong evidence that the candidate has relevant experience and would work towards achieving Chartered status in the short term).
  3. 10 years + experience of the development and design of major civil engineering projects.
  4. Strong technical background of civil engineering design delivery and/or civil engineering design management.
  5. Agile and adaptable, with experience in working in major project environments.
  6. Strong communicator, able to work effectively with a range of people across engineering and non-engineering disciplines, and an open and collaborative team member.
  7. Skilled in MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint.
  8. Experience in offshore transmission and offshore wind development.
Location and Working Arrangements

The post will be:

  • Full time (35 hours per week)
  • Based in Glasgow
