Plant Pest Inspector

Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled Plant Pest Inspector to join our team at Jobs in Science.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering physical inspections of plants, planting material, and produce in Border Control Points and inspection centres. The role involves managing customer expectations, liaising with regulatory bodies, and being fully IT literate to examine online applications and record findings via a paperless system.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough inspections of plants, planting material, and produce to identify quarantine plant pests and diseases.
• Manage customer relationships and expectations in line with policies, targets, and legislation.
• Liaise with HMRC, UK Border Agency, Port Health, Animal Health authorities, and Border Control Point operations management to ensure effective communication and compliance.
• Maintain accurate records of inspections and findings using a paperless system.

Requirements

• Hold a full, valid UK driving licence with independent access to own transport.
• Have an interest/background in Horticulture, Agriculture, or the environment.
• Hold GCSEs in English, Maths, and a science.
• Experience using MS Word, Outlook, Teams, and Excel.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a high-pressure, time-sensitive environment with delivery partners.

Salary and Benefits

The estimated salary for this role is £35,000 - £45,000 per annum, depending on experience. Successful candidates will also have access to a comprehensive benefits package, including training opportunities and career development.
