About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Construction Law Expert to join our team at Barratt Developments. As a key member of our Regulatory, Construction and Disputes Team, you will play a vital role in shaping the future success of our Group Legal function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a broad spectrum of legal work, including reviewing, drafting, negotiating and advising on a variety of legal agreements, which will be mainly property and construction contracts.
  • Review, draft and negotiate terms of appointment for architects and other consultant types, as well as negotiations involving contractors appointed under our large package agreements and/or other design & build contracts.
  • Provide steering and advice to the business (including the Executive/Board) on various legal issues affecting the house building sector, including some compliance and regulatory matters.
  • Be capable of providing advice on some construction litigation matters, for example Terminations, Pay Less Notices and Adjudications.
  • Take responsibility for the supervision and training of more junior lawyers within the team.
  • Be a lead participant in the shaping and delivery of the future strategy of the Group Legal Team, including the implementation of a tailored training programme for the wider business.
  • Actively participate in and collaborate with the Senior lawyers and/or the Group Head of Legal as and where required in respect of complex and strategic projects.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years PQE.
  • A motivated, energised and confident character, with a "can do" approach to their work and advice.
  • Be commercially minded.
  • Be able to effectively balance risk with the overall aims and objectives of the Group.
  • Private practice training essential.
  • In-house experience helpful but not an absolute prerequisite for the role.
  • Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and autonomously.
  • Ability to deliver effectively under pressure to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organisational and multi-tasking and drafting skills.
  • Good word processing and IT skills.
  • Be prepared to design and deliver internal training in construction contracts and their uses.
