Special Education Assistant Role

The School District #62 (Sooke) is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Education Assistant to support students with special needs in a variety of classrooms. As an Education Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and other support staff to provide individualized support to students with Autism, behaviour disorders, learning and physical disabilities, syndromes, and disorders that affect student learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students in their educational goals and objectives
  • Assist students during classroom activities and transitions
  • Implement adapted or modified curriculum as directed by teachers
  • Support social inclusion and behaviour strategies in the classroom and on the playground
  • Objective observe and record student behaviour as required

Qualifications:

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent
  • Education Assistant Certification or equivalent in a related field or equivalent experience working with individuals with disabilities
  • Minimum three (3) months of experience working with children
  • Knowledge and understanding of child development

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates patience and acceptance when dealing with students
  • Shows kindness and cares about the well-being of students
  • Actively shows courtesy and respect to all, proactively builds healthy and trusting relationships with all; contributes to a positive working environment

Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in planning and implementation of Individual Education Plan goals, objectives, and supports
  2. Participate in supervision of students within the school, on the playground, and on field trips
  3. Assist students during classroom activities
  4. Support social inclusion in the classroom and on the playground through implementing self-regulation strategies, behaviour support strategies, communication strategies, and monitoring behaviour

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical ability to respond to student needs, including lifting and transferring students as required
