Company Overview
The Palm Group, with 4,200 employees, is a leading supplier in Europe of newsprint and corrugated base paper made from 100% recycled paper, as well as corrugated, cardboard packaging. With operations based in King's Lynn, the UK site for the Palm Group manufactures graphic papers using the widest, largest, and most powerful newsprint machine in the world. This machine has the capacity to produce 400,000 metric tonnes of newsprint, improved newsprint, and magazine grades per annum. The company also has a recycling division, Palm Recycling Limited, which supplies Palm Paper Limited with the required waste paper, carrying out collections and recycling services for the public sector and commercial clients.

Job Overview

Location: King's Lynn
Contract Type: Permanent (Full-Time)
Hours: 40 hours per week (Monday – Thursday 0700 hrs to 1600 hrs with half an hour unpaid lunch break and Friday 0700 hrs to 1300 hrs)
Reporting to: Mechanical Supervisor

  • Ensure PPM's are completed to schedules set by Mechanical Supervisor for the area.
  • React to day-to-day issues within the specific area of responsibility, seeking assistance from above only if extra knowledge and experience on the issue is required.
  • Complete end of day checks in and around the mechanical workshop to ensure all cupboards are locked up, bins emptied, tools stored away, and carry out general housekeeping duties.
  • React accordingly to any faults/breakdowns occurring during standard operation time and carry out troubleshooting/fault finding in cooperation with your workforces.
  • Co-ordinate and accomplish mechanical maintenance and repair work of all equipment, installations, and machinery.
  • Support the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor with planning and accomplishing related projects.
  • Carry out overhauls of equipment in a modern mechanical workshop.
  • Carry out weld repairs to plant pipework.
  • Conduct pump changes, roll changes, and general heavy mechanical works within a team of trained and experienced mechanical engineers.
  • On-call service in case of breakdowns in accordance with company procedures and policies for the agreed on-call plan.
Specific Responsibilities

The Mechanical Engineer is workshop-based and will be issued with a full set of tools to enable them to carry out the tasks given. Assist in the maintenance of a safe and healthy working environment and ensure that all equipment is used in accordance with H&S regulations and company rules. Use resources as efficiently as possible and ensure that all activities are done in compliance with all legal regulations for environmental protection. The jobholder is requested to maintain the process-related housekeeping standard for all equipment and installations at the highest level. Specific required housekeeping actions could be requested at any time (e.g. cleaning of chests, tanks, heat recovery installation, floors, framing, etc.)

Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship or similar is required. A minimum of five years' experience in a Mechanical Engineering position is also required. Ideally, experience with fork trucks, MEWPS (mobile elevating work platforms), overhead cranes, confined spaces, welding, and machining is required.
