Clinical Negligence Costs Team Role

We are seeking a skilled Clinical Negligence Costs Negotiator to join our dedicated team. As a key member, you will be responsible for reviewing, assessing, and negotiating settlement of costs matters, as well as dealing with all procedural aspects and pleadings until settlement or assessment of costs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage your own caseload using our in-house case management system, ensuring timely and accurate maintenance, billing, and management information.
  • Review and advise on end-of-life costs claimed, including drafting Points of Dispute and responding to replies.
  • Achieve a daily chargeable hour target, managing workload to meet service level agreements and critical dates.
  • Delegate tasks to other team members where appropriate.
  • Review files, setting strategies, and identifying strengths and weaknesses, preparing a document to reflect this.
  • Prepare cost strategy reports, updating throughout the case.
  • Provide written updates to clients detailing case activity, ensuring they receive up-to-date and accurate information.
  • Undertake periodic reviews of files in line with client requirements.
  • Negotiate costs advantageous to our clients.
  • Deal with correspondence and telephone calls.
  • Meet agreed performance targets.
  • Draft relevant applications and/or opposing applications, instructing Counsel or Costs Lawyer to attend.

Working Hours and Location

This role is based out of several office locations, including Bolton, Liverpool, Coventry, Bristol, and Leeds. You will work 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with one unpaid hour for lunch.

Essential Skills and Attributes

  • Experience in negotiating costs, including preparing Points of Dispute, considering replies, and proceeding cases to PA and DA.
  • Good standard of education, including maths and English.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including previous experience of client liaison.
  • Good telephone negotiation skills.
  • Previous experience of handling your own caseload and meeting service level agreements and key performance indicators.
  • Ability to use your own initiative.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize workloads.
  • Excellent listening skills.
  • Ability to make decisions.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to act as part of a team.
  • Proficient IT skills.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Education - Degree and/or LPC and/or ALCD or equivalent.
  • Conducted own advocacy.
