Job Overview

This is a new post within the Kent Oncology Centre, based in Canterbury, providing services to patients from East Kent.

The post holder will join our team of medical and clinical oncologists providing Oncology services from a East or West Kent base. We have a well-established oncology research department, providing the opportunity for the post holder to run and develop clinical trials.

Main Duties of the Job

To provide a high standard of care to any patient for whom you have clinical responsibility. This will include any patients referred to you and cared for by you personally or by members of your team and, in addition, any patients of consultant colleagues when you are covering on-call or for annual leave.

To participate in clinical and other service activities and developments with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care across the Trust.

To work in close co-operation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues, both within and outside the specialty, to provide high quality health care to the Trust's patients, and to make a contribution to future thinking about the Trust's strategic direction.

Working for Our Organisation

The Trust provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 460,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, and some specialist services to a considerably larger population.

Its major hospitals are Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury and Maidstone Hospital. The Trust's Headquarters are at Maidstone Hospital.

The Trust's Chairman is Mr Annette Doherty, the Chief Executive is Mr Miles Scott and the Medical Director is Dr Sara Mumford. Clinical services are organised into nine clinical directorates. The Clinical Director's of the Kent Oncology Centre are Dr Kannon Nathan & Dr Timothy Sevitt. The Director of Operations for the Division is Alice Farrell, and the General Manager for Oncology is Grace O'Driscoll.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

Duties of this post will be to support the consultant service across a range of tumour types:

  • Attending Consultant led out-patient clinics (both in the Centre and Peripheral Clinics), and undertaking related admin and chemotherapy prescribing.
  • Supervision of SHOs and ward patients
  • Review of patients attending for chemotherapy and radiotherapy if required by nursing or radiography staff
  • Teaching of SHOs and medical students
  • Involvement in clinical governance and audit activities
Person Specification

Education

Essential Criteria

  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCP or equivalent

Desirable Criteria

  • Higher Qualification in Medicine or Surgery

Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Clinical Training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in specialty.
  • Oncology experience at SpR or equivalent level

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in Clinical Audit and Research.
  • Experience in participating in specialist clinics

Skills

Essential Criteria

  • Enthusiasm for developing tumour site specialisation and Cancer Services in Kent.
  • Ability to organise and manage

Desirable Criteria

  • An interest and a capacity to teach and learn from members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Dedication to maintaining and developing the cancer care group in co-operation with other hospital departments.
