MLK Education Search is seeking an experienced Child Development Specialist to join a therapeutic school in South East, London. This school offers a unique approach to education, combining therapy and teaching to support pupils' social, emotional, and educational development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ethical Facilitation: Ensure that therapy is conducted ethically, safely, and with consent from all parents, carers, and pupils.
  • Program Planning: Plan, resource, and prepare effective and engaging therapy programs for children, with support from teachers and leaders.
  • Progress Reports: Complete termly therapy reports on pupils' progress in individual and group therapy sessions.
  • Best Practice Role Model: Be a role model of best practice, including emotion coaching and other key therapeutic strategies outlined in our policy.
  • Collaboration: Liaise professionally with the lead therapist, senior head of therapy, and the OHS multidisciplinary team to effectively support pupils on the current caseload.
  • Family Relationships: Build positive working relationships with children's families through consistent phone and email contact.
  • Safety and Supervision: Ensure children are supervised and safe at all times.
  • Information Gathering: Continuously obtain key information on pupils through parent/carer communication and inform the therapy/teaching team.
  • Accurate Documentation: Keep accurate and concise therapy notes, stored securely to maintain confidentiality.
  • Transitions and Resources: Support smooth and effective transitions, including preparation and implementation of relevant resources.
  • Tailored Support: Provide appropriate support to ensure pupils can access their learning, tailoring therapeutic programs to individual needs.
  • Collaboration with Teams: Work closely with the teaching team and other therapy members to develop and implement therapy progress plans.
  • Parent Engagement: Attend therapy meetings, open days for parents and carers, and relevant meetings with professionals.
  • Support Sessions: Create and deliver support sessions and targeted trainings for parent groups and family workshop days.
  • Professional Development: Attend regular meetings, training, and learning activities, contributing to the school's ethos and aims.
  • External Supervision: Organize and attend individual external supervision to support therapeutic work carried out in schools.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain total confidentiality regarding pupils, staff, and school information.

Qualifications:

  • You must hold a current degree in your specialized field and be fully qualified. Registration with an appropriate body (e.g., BACP) is essential.
  • Experience: You should have a proven track record of working with children and young people in challenging contexts.
  • Specialized Expertise: A range of experience in your specialized therapeutic field is essential.
  • Language and Mathematics: High competence in English and mathematics is a requirement.
  • Classroom Experience: Operating in a classroom or similar environment with children who have special educational needs (SEN) and present challenging behavior is essential.
  • Additional Qualifications: Further training or qualifications related to therapy, children & young people, SEN, and leadership & management are desirable.
  • Outstanding knowledge and understanding of therapy (in own specialised field) as well as wider therapies and their applications Understanding of mental health in children, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), trauma and the impact of abuse and mental health difficulties on child development, attachment and behaviour
