Job Summary

Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science is seeking a talented Analytical Chemist to join their Hydrocarbons Team within the Radiological and Chemical Sciences (RACS) Group. As a key member of the team, you will contribute to high-quality analytical support and expertise, data interpretation, and scientific advice to a diverse portfolio of internal and external projects.

In this role, you will develop expertise in analytical sciences and techniques to analyze a range of hydrocarbon compounds, including measuring their concentrations in marine environmental samples. You will work closely with the Hydrocarbons Technical Manager and Principal Scientist to deliver project objectives and maintain laboratory standards.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Perform analysis and reporting of samples for hydrocarbon compounds in the marine environment.
  2. Maintain laboratory housekeeping and management.
  3. Calibrate instruments and keep accurate records.
  4. Coordinate project delivery and sample preparation.
  5. Operate and maintain complex instrumentation (Spectrofluorimeter, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionisation Detector).
  6. Troubleshoot and solve problems.
  7. Deliver high-quality, accurate data.
  8. Work in accordance with formal quality systems (ISO/IEC17025, UKAS accreditation) and help maintain laboratory standards.

Requirements

  • You must have experience working in an analytical laboratory following Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Operating, maintaining, and calibrating analytical instrumentation is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of quality control practices and associated documentation relevant to ISO/IEC17025 is essential.
  • You must have a curiosity and determination to solve analytical problems and drive change to improve efficiency and analytical understanding.
  • Effective team working and autonomy are essential.
  • You must have good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Methodical, organized, and able to multitask while maintaining focus.
  • Awareness of good health and safety culture and ability to follow COSHH Risk Assessments.
