Design Engineer Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Design Engineer to join our team at Electricity North West in Kendal. As a Design Engineer, you will play a crucial role in designing complex LV and HV overhead line and underground diversion, reinforcement, asset replacement, refurbishment, maintenance, network referrals, and clearance issues on our Wood pole, Mural wiring, and underground networks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the design phase on plant, multi-vector, UVA, and reinforcement schemes
  • Manage the design phase of overhead line maintenance and refurbishment projects, ensuring design work packages are delivered on time
  • Create scheme documentation and design drawings using our mapping and data collection systems
  • Analyze and interrogate overhead line data using our asset management tools, progressing works in conjunction with design technicians
  • Work closely with design technicians and work planners to prioritize maintenance, asset replacement, and refurbishment works
  • Communicate and progress project elements that require interaction with internal and external stakeholders, such as BT and street lighting authorities
  • Present schemes and process financial approvals
Requirements:
  • Hold a minimum of a HNC in Electrical Engineering
  • Have an excellent working knowledge of MS Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, with emphasis on Excel
  • Be able to manipulate large volumes of data using advanced Excel formulas and present results in various formats, including graphically
  • Be self-motivated and have a proactive approach to problem-solving
  • Be a strong team player, willing and able to work independently
  • Be an excellent verbal and written communicator
  • Hold a full, valid UK driving license
  • Be capable of performing on-site surveys or earthing tests, some of which may be in remote locations and on uneven terrain
  • Be competent in the use of CAD and/or our drawing packages
  • Assess and triage complex design issues both on-site and from a desktop exercise
  • Have a sound understanding of planning and design principles from LV to 11kV
  • Be capable of producing simple HV/LV designs
  • Have experience of design, planning, costing, and project managing work on small projects
  • Knowledge of our financial processes and National and Company Technical Specifications
  • Be accountable for delivery of own work to time, cost, and quality
  • Be responsible for design accuracy of individual projects
  • Extensive knowledge of planning and design from LV to 11kV
  • Have a high level of understanding of secondary network protection, embedded generation, interface to the 33kV systems design issues
  • Have a comprehensive knowledge of our strategy and objectives relating to secondary network performance and investment
  • Be able to analyze/diagnose complex problems and choose suitable outcomes without precedents to guide decisions
  • Be able to provide technical supervision and coordination of small design project teams
  • Take complete responsibility for complex projects
  • Be able to give technical detailed advice to customers and other departments
  • Have extensive knowledge of financial programmed and National & Company Specifications
  • Have a comprehensive knowledge of policy and standards and the ability to design and prepare detailed specifications for all secondary network asset replacement and refurbishment schemes
  • Not require technical supervision
  • Undertake training as required of staff to equivalent level of authority/competency
  • Be responsible for the management of the design phase of programs of work and design accuracy of individual projects
  • Be responsible for re-scoping and justifying cost variations to planned projects during construction
