About the Role

The Head of Research and Policy will lead the strategic direction of our programme, shaping innovative research initiatives, investments, and partnerships to drive cutting-edge data science with public benefits. This role will also develop a policy function, ensuring our work aligns with key government missions and commissions legal and ethical advice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead a programme of investment to demonstrate the value of smart data research in addressing real-world challenges across our four research themes, overseeing a £6m research budget.
  • Build partnerships with government users of data and research, connecting government missions and public policy challenges to our capabilities.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of a data policy function, including securing legal and ethical resources.
  • Contribute to the development of strategies and activities led by other parts of the SDR UK Hub, including data infrastructures, capability, and public engagement.
  • Lead a small, high-performing team.

About You

We seek a strong leader with good strategic judgement, experienced in working with diverse stakeholders and communicating effectively with various audiences. You will have a deep understanding of the UK data policy landscape, including governance, legislation, and ethics.

Essential Criteria

  • Strong leadership skills, including setting clear direction, inspiring teams, and shaping a work area.
  • Highly developed strategic skills, including mapping the landscape, identifying opportunities, and making effective decisions.
  • Experience in building and maintaining effective networks with different communities to deliver outcomes.
  • Ability to communicate and influence effectively with various audiences.
  • Understanding and experience of the use of data, analysis, or research.
  • Understanding and experience of the UK data policy landscape.

Desirable Criteria

  • Understanding of the UK academic funding environment.
