Leading Safety Engineer for Combat Systems

BAE Systems is a global leader in defence, security, and aerospace. We are seeking an experienced Principal Engineer – Safety (Programmable Elements) to join our Integrated Combat Systems team.

The salary for this role is Negotiable depending on experience, but we estimate it to be around £60,000 - £90,000 per annum based on industry standards and the location of Weymouth, Frimley, Broad Oak, Filton.

Job Description:

This role involves conducting Programmable Elements Safety Engineering activities, such as PHA, FTA, and PSSA/SSA, to support the Combat System Design Safety Justification and Whole Boat Safety Case. You will determine the causes of systematic Programmable Elements Safety failures, common cause analysis, and define and monitor Programmable Elements Safety Requirements.

  • Main Responsibilities:
  • Conducting safety analyses and risk assessments
  • Determining the causes of systematic safety failures
  • Defining and monitoring safety requirements
  • Organising and contributing to hazard identification workshops and safety committee meetings
  • Engaging with third parties to review and gather safety evidence
  • Reporting progress at project and programme reviews

Required Skills and Qualifications:

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Essential:
  • Demonstrable experience in Programmable Elements Safety Engineering and activities contributing to fault tree analysis and safety integrity level allocation documents
  • Understanding of safety of systems with programmable elements in accordance with Def Stan 00-055 and 00-056
  • Experience in safety engineering and programmable elements safety requirements in accordance with IEC/BS EN 61508 in the defence domain
  • Competence in software development safety integrity level design assurance level
