Ophthalmic Specialist

This is a pan-trust Consultant Ophthalmologist post for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, primarily based at the Lincoln County Hospital with some duties at peripheral sites.
The appointee will be expected to take part in the consultant on-call rota and provide emergency cover for colleagues during periods of absence.
The candidate should have a sub-speciality interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology and be able to deliver high-volume cataract surgery, ensuring the Trust meets its contractual obligations with respect to the 18-week wait.
The United Lincoln Hospitals Trust provides ophthalmic services to an expanding population in excess of 800,000, based on two main sites, Lincoln and Boston, with additional services provided on peripheral sites.
Applicants may elect to work whole-time or part-time, with modification of the job content discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
Main Duties of the JobThe Appointee will be expected to provide a comprehensive Ophthalmic service, supporting the provision of an effective countywide service and contributing towards achieving the 18-week wait across the whole eye department.
He/she will be expected to carry out teaching duties as required, take an active part in the Postgraduate Medical Education program, and contribute to the development and delivery of services, helping to formulate plans for its expansion.
The appointee will be required to play an active part in the robust clinical audit program, report all critical incidents, and attend and support Departmental audit and Clinical Governance meetings.
Job Responsibilities- Provide a comprehensive Ophthalmic service, supporting the provision of an effective countywide service and contributing towards achieving the 18-week wait across the whole eye department.
- Deliver high-volume cataract surgery, ensuring the Trust meets its contractual obligations with respect to the 18-week wait.
- Take part in the consultant on-call rota for emergency duties and provide emergency cover for colleagues during periods of absence.
- Have continuing responsibility for patients in his/her care and for the proper functioning of the department.
- Be involved in the delivery of undergraduate teaching to students from Lincoln Medical School and in the teaching of ophthalmic trainee staff.
- Regularly attend Clinical Audit, Governance, and Departmental meetings and play an active part in the robust clinical audit program.
- Report all critical incidents and be required to participate in management duties within the Department and the organisation.
- Be mentored by a senior consultant for the first 6 months of the post.
- FRCS, FRCOphth or equivalent qualification.
- Be on the specialist register for Ophthalmology.
- Full GMC Registration (with a 'Licence to Practise').
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology or within six months of anticipated CCST date on date of interview.
- Fellowship in Paediatric or Cataract (or a subspecialist interest that complements the department).
- Relevant Higher Degree or equivalent.
- Maintain own education to a minimum standard set by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and show a commitment to continual learning.
- Commitment to the Development of a quality Ophthalmic service for ULHT.
- Ability to develop National Care Pathways in Ophthalmology.
- Understanding and commitment to modernising the service.
- Recent experience of developing a service.
- Ability to consolidate and organise change.
- Able to contribute to department and CMT management.
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Paediatric surgery.
- Ability to carry out high-volume cataract surgery.
- Experience of and undertaken Clinical Audit, with recently presented findings.
- Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
- Evidence of recently published research or case reports.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Team leadership skills.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the educational needs of trainees and commitment to effective teaching at all levels.
- Experience of teaching clinical skills to a wide Multi Disciplinary Team audience.
- Understanding of the principles and implementation of Clinical Governance.
- Computer Literacy.
- Ability to innovate and develop new technology and methods.
