Job Description

We are seeking an Optical Systems Engineer with both design and Assembly Integration and Test (AIT) experience to join our engineering team and deliver transformative laser communications technology. You will be responsible for the development of our optical subsystems, from requirements definition to testing in the field.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design of Laser Communication Terminal Optical Sub-Systems: Develop laser communication terminal optical sub-systems for extreme environments.
  • Requirement Definition and Trade-Off Analysis: Define and analyze requirements for complex optical systems, finding the optimal balance of performance against cost.
  • Modelling and Optimization: Model and optimize optical system performance, including tolerancing.
  • Practical Breadboard Testing: Conduct practical breadboard testing to validate modelled data.
  • Test Procedure Definition and Execution: Work with AIT engineers to define and execute test procedures for optical subsystems.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Be the subject matter expert for optical and photonic systems.
  • Supplier Management: Manage suppliers of optical and photonic components.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership of subsystem development projects.
Requirements:
  • Experience in Optical Systems Definition: Experience defining requirements on optical systems, modelling, and performing trades studies to inform design selection.
  • Optical Design and Analysis: Optical design/analysis experience using Zemax for design, optimization, and tolerancing.
  • Hands-On Lab Experience: Hands-on lab experience designing and carrying out tests for relevant optical systems.
Desirable Skills:
  • Technical Project Planning and Systems Engineering: Technical project planning and systems engineering experience, ideally in a Model-Based Systems Engineering context.
  • Complex Electro-Optical Systems Design: Experience designing complex electro-optical systems for extreme environments in mass-constrained applications.
  • Adaptive Optics and Turbulence Modelling: Experience with adaptive optics, turbulence modelling, measurement, and compensation methods.
  • High-Power Lasers and Optical Amplifiers: Experience with high-power lasers, optical amplifiers, and relevant safety requirements.
  • Optical Instrument Calibration and Alignment: Experience with optical instrument calibration and alignment, and procedure definition.
  • Familiarity with Optical and Photonic Components: Familiarity with optical and photonic components relevant to free-space optical communications.
Location and Benefits

Location: Hybrid with travel when required. Our office is based in Osney Mead, Oxford.
