The Department of Physics at Imperial College London is seeking a Mechanical Instrumentation Workshop Manager to oversee the design and manufacturing support for the Department's research experiments. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing all aspects of the facility, including budgeting, Workplace Health & Safety, scheduling, quality checking, and subcontracting. They will supervise a team of technicians, oversee local apprentice tutors, and provide a safe working environment for apprentices.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Review and prioritise workshop requests, managing requirements, scheduling, and charging of work when necessary.
  • Provide troubleshooting and quality checking to ensure timely and economical delivery of research needs.
  • Act as a technical expert for research staff and students, solving workshop requests and advising on complex design and manufacture needs.
  • Develop the facility by upskilling, investing in new technology, and project managing installations and upgrades.

The ideal candidate will have experience in mechanical engineering, with a strong background in design and production, CNC production methods, and operation of manual machine tools. They will also have experience working in a research or engineering environment, with a proven ability to assess and change priorities as requirements and deadlines evolve.
