Job Title: Specialist Screener

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Specialist Screener to join our team at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will be responsible for screening and grading eligible people with diabetes in the Liverpool and North Mersey Diabetic Eye Screening Programme cohort according to national standards.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Provide retinal screening and grading at primary, secondary, and arbitration levels.
  • Perform specialized screening and grading of patients on the digital surveillance with optical coherence tomography (OCT) pathway.
  • Assess patients of all ages, abilities, and communication needs, tailoring care delivery as required.
  • Provide a screening service within secure venues, such as HMP or secure hospitals.
  • Act as a key point of contact for the screening team, offering clinical advice, options, and support.
  • Attend regular meetings to discuss service delivery, providing feedback on issues, incidents, or risks escalated by the team.
  • Oversee the daily running of the screening service, ensuring business continuity through liaison with the administration team.
  • Assist the Programme Manager in forward planning to ensure the screening service meets national standards and quality assurance indicators.
  • Provide technical support to screening staff, assisting with camera or IT issues.
  • Undertake other administrative duties as specified by the Programme Manager.
Requirements:
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent knowledge.
  • Passed the Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners (unless previously attained the City & Guilds Diabetic Eye Screening qualification).
  • Qualified Workplace Assessor for the Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners.
  • Registered with the Academy of Healthcare Science.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience:
  • Evidence of high standard grading through previous participation in monthly 'Test and Training' exercises.
  • Technical experience with retinal screening equipment and software.
  • Experience in clinical audit and research.
  • Experience in teaching retinal screening and grading.
  • Management or team leader experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Professional manner.
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team, manage time, and cope with pressures.
  • Effective communication with staff and patients, including those with learning or communication difficulties.
  • Caring and sensitive approach to dealing with elderly, infirm, and visually impaired patients.
  • Accuracy, clinical precision, and attention to detail in filing test results.
Other Requirements:
  • Willingness to work flexibly and at other sites when required.
  • Ability and willingness to undertake further training as necessary.
  • Able to work the required hours, maintaining a flexible approach to working patterns.
  • Member of the British Association of Retinal Screeners.
