We are seeking a permanent English Tutor who can deliver training, engage, and inspire learners with little or no prior education. The successful candidate will be based on-site at HMP Littlehey, delivering functional Skills English up to level 2 to small groups of prison-based learners.

The Tutor will develop the skills, knowledge, and behaviours of learners, while supporting them with their long-term goals and aspirations. Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying individual learner needs and creating tailored learning plans that link to their long-term employment goals.
  • Continuously reviewing learner progression to ensure training meets their identified needs.
  • Preparing, delivering, and reviewing comprehensive lesson plans that address the training needs of the group, including basic literacy, numeracy, language, and social/employability barriers to employment.
  • Actively gaining feedback from learners and other sources, reviewing and improving curriculum content accordingly.
  • Engaging and motivating individuals and learner groups to increase retention.
  • Completing necessary administration, such as registers, enrolment forms, ILPs, reviews, and Awarding Body documentation, in line with contractual deadlines.
  • Working with colleagues and hosts to assist learner progression towards qualifications and movement into employment.
  • Meeting contractual KPIs for success and performance.

Requirements include:

  • Maths and English Level 2 for Vocational Tutors and Level 3 for Functional Skills Tutors.
  • Full teaching qualification at Level 5 or above or equivalent (e.g. PGCE, Cert Ed, DTTLS) or willingness to work towards.
  • Subject specialist qualification (desirable).
  • Successful applicants will undergo a DBS or DS check or Prison Security Clearance, as applicable, and provide proof of Right to Work in the UK.

AE Talent Solutions can support candidates without teaching or assessing qualifications through the appropriate qualifications and assessments during their probationary period.

Key skills and abilities include:

  • Confidence in using diverse presentation, facilitation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage challenging situations while remaining calm and in control, especially in group situations.
  • Respect for and understanding of Safeguarding, Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety, and Data Protection policies, with specific attention to health and safety requirements when organizing off-site activities.
  • Passion to motivate and lead by example to support people to achieve qualifications.
  • Clear understanding of the OFSTED framework (EIF) with the ability to meet all standards.
