Job Summary

Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to fill the position of Acute Medicine Consultant. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality acute care to patients across the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

Main Responsibilities
  • Providing consultant-delivered care to patients
  • Ensuring patient safety, dignity, and care are given the highest priority
  • Being proactive in ensuring that patients receive rapid assessment, treatment, and clinical decision-making
  • Undertaking clinical leadership and supervision, teaching, and training of junior medical staff
  • Liaising with clinicians and managers to address any issues arising that may affect the services
  • Contributing to the ongoing development of the acute medicine services at WWL

Person Specification
  • Knowledge of Managerial structure within the NHS
  • Ability to work in a flexible manner
  • Commitment to the development of Acute Medical services within the trust
  • Must show evidence of being proactive and self-motivated

Recent comprehensive experience in Acute Medicine and Respiratory Medicine is essential. Experience of Audit and its role in Clinical Governance, effective leadership and interpersonal skills, commitment to training and teaching of junior medical staff and other health professionals, and experience in clinical supervision are also required. Formal leadership training, CCT or HST in Respiratory Medicine, additional experience of working in dedicated Medical Admissions unit or equivalent, previous experience of leading a team, attendance at 'Teaching the teachers' or similar training course in medical education, and CCT in General Medicine/Acute Medicine are desirable.

MB ChB or equivalent, GMC with licence to practice, and MRCP (or equivalent) are essential qualifications. Higher Degree PhD, MD or equivalent, formal leadership qualification, and entry on the Specialist Register for GIM or within 6 months of CCT are desirable.
